Where to Install a Type 1 Surge Protector — Service Entrance & LPZ
The Type 1 SPD is the first point in the protection cascade — installed at the LPZ 0/1 boundary between the utility meter and the main breaker, where direct lightning current must be intercepted before it reaches any downstream device.
50kA Iimp (10/350µs). Mandatory per IEC 62305 when an external LPS is present. No Type 2 can substitute at this position.
Type 2 SPD — handles residual surge energy (8/20µs, Imax). Coordinates with Type 1 upstream.
Type 3 SPD — close-protection for sensitive equipment at the point of use.
0.5m rule: Every 1m of lead wire adds ~1kV under impulse. Keep L + PE under 0.5m — or use a Type 1+2 combined SPD.

What is a Type 1 surge protector?
A Type 1 surge protector (Class I SPD per IEC 61643-11) is installed at the service entrance to handle direct lightning current. Tested with a 10/350µs impulse waveform with Iimp ratings of 25–100kA per pole — far higher energy capacity than Type 2 (8/20µs waveform). Required when the building has an external lightning protection system (LPS) per IEC 62305. What is an LPS? →
Where should a Type 1 SPD be installed?
Type 1 SPD is installed at the service entrance — at the LPZ 0/1 boundary, between the utility meter and the main breaker. Wire length must be kept under 0.5m total (line + PE wire combined) to avoid the voltage addition effect. If longer runs are unavoidable, specify a Type 1+2 combined SPD. Type 1+2 guide → Use the SPD selector tool → to confirm the right model.
What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 SPD?
Type 1 handles direct lightning current (10/350µs waveform, Iimp parameter) at the service entrance. Type 2 handles residual surge energy (8/20µs waveform, Imax parameter) at the MDB. Type 1 has much higher energy handling capacity. In a cascaded protection system, both are used together. Full comparison →
What configuration should I choose — 1+1, 3+0, 3+1, or 4+0?
1+1: single-phase, TT earthing. 3+0: 3-phase TNC (combined N+PE conductor). 3+1: 3-phase TT or TNS with separate neutral — commercial buildings, data centres. 4+0: 4-pole TNS — critical facilities requiring full 4-pole protection. 3-phase selection guide →
Does a Type 1 SPD need a backup fuse?
Yes. Type 1 SPDs require a dedicated backup OCPD (fuse or MCB) for short-circuit protection — the SPD itself does not interrupt fault current. The maximum backup fuse rating is specified per model and must be installed in series upstream of the SPD. SPD & fuse coordination →
Why does the 0.5m wire length rule matter?
Under impulse conditions, every 1m of connecting wire adds approximately 1kV of additional voltage due to inductance. If the total lead length (line conductor + PE conductor) exceeds 0.5m, the effective protection level (Up) is significantly increased — potentially defeating the SPD's purpose. Use a V-shape wiring configuration where possible. Installation guide →
Can a Type 2 SPD be used instead of Type 1 at the service entrance?
No — not where an external lightning protection system is present. Type 2 SPDs are rated to 8/20µs waveform (Imax), which cannot handle the energy levels of a direct lightning strike (10/350µs). If an LPS is present, IEC 62305 requires a Type 1 (Class I) SPD at the LPZ 0/1 boundary. Type 1+2 SPD →
When should I specify Type 1+2 combined instead of separate Type 1 and Type 2?
A Type 1+2 combined SPD is the right choice when wire length cannot be kept under 0.5m total; when panel space is limited; or when a single DIN rail unit at the service entrance with both Class I and Class II protection is required. Type 1+2 selection guide →
