Step 1 — Which Type Do You Need?

Single Phase Surge Protector — Quick Selection Guide

Two questions determine the right single phase surge protector for your installation. Answer both to go straight to the right product.

A
Type 2 — Underground Cable Supply, No External LPS

Most residential and commercial installations. TPK-20 or TPK-40 at the main distribution board. Standard for all TT, TN-S, and TN-C systems.

B
Type 1+2 — Overhead Line Supply or External LPS Present

Rural properties, buildings with lightning rods, or overhead utility connections. TPK-7 or TPK-12.5 — combined protection in one module, no 10m separation required.

Step 2 — Which Configuration?
Earthing System Config Wiring Uc
TT — Most residential 1+1 L + N + PE 320V
TN-S — Commercial / Industrial 2+0 L + N + PE 275V
TN-C — Older industrial 1+0 L + PE only 275V

Not sure which earthing system? Check your distribution board — TT systems have a separate earth rod. TN-S systems share the neutral-earth bond at the transformer. Selection guide →

Installation Position

Where to Install a Single Phase Surge Protector

The single phase surge protector installs at the main distribution board (MDB), directly after the main breaker. It clamps residual surge voltage before it reaches all downstream circuits. A Type 3 SPD at the equipment terminal provides additional fine protection.

1
MDB / Service Entrance — Type 1+2 SPD only

Only required when overhead supply or external LPS is present. TPK-7 or TPK-12.5 installs at the same MDB — combined Class I+II in one module, no separate service entrance panel needed.

2
Main Distribution Board This page — Type 2 SPD

TPK-20 or TPK-40 installed here, directly after the main breaker. Clamps induced surges to ≤1.5kV (Uc 320V) for all downstream circuits. Required at every MDB per IEC 60364-5-53. Lead length must not exceed 0.5m total. Installation guide →

3
Equipment Terminal / Type 3 SPD

Optional fine protection for sensitive electronics. Type 3 SPD installed at the sub-distribution board or socket outlet, close to the protected equipment. Requires ≥5–10m cable separation from the upstream Type 2 for correct energy coordination.

FAQ

Single Phase Surge Protector — Frequently Asked Questions

All FAQs →

What is a single phase surge protector?

A single phase surge protector (SPD) is installed at a 230V or 120V single-phase distribution board to clamp voltage surges caused by lightning, switching transients, or grid disturbances. Classified as Type 2 (most common — for underground cable supply) or Type 1+2 (for overhead supply or external LPS), per IEC 61643-11. It protects all downstream circuits including sensitive electronics, appliances, and control equipment.

What is the difference between a single phase and 3-phase surge protector?

A single phase surge protector is designed for 230V L-N-PE systems (1+0, 1+1, or 2+0 configurations). A 3-phase surge protector covers 400V L1-L2-L3-N-PE systems (3P, 3P+N, 4P configurations). The earthing mode selection and Uc voltage differ between the two. If you have a single 230V circuit, you need a single phase SPD — for a 400V three-phase system, see our 3-phase range.

Should I choose 1+0, 1+1, or 2+0 configuration?

1+1 (TT earthing): Protects L-PE and N-PE — essential for TT systems where the neutral is earthed separately. Uc 320V. Most common in residential. 2+0 (TN-S): Protects L-PE and N-PE with combined neutral-earth at transformer. Uc 275V. 1+0 (TN-C): Protects L-PE only — for TN-C systems where N and PE are combined. Never use 1+1 on a TN-C system. Full guide →

Why does a TT system need Uc 320V instead of 275V?

In a TT system, an earth fault causes the neutral-earth voltage to rise temporarily (Temporary Over-Voltage, or TOV). A single phase surge protector with Uc 275V would conduct and thermally disconnect under this normal TOV condition — causing nuisance disconnection. Uc 320V provides sufficient margin above the TOV level to prevent false tripping while still clamping genuine surges effectively.

Do I need Type 1+2 or is Type 2 sufficient?

Type 2 is sufficient for most installations with underground cable supply and no external lightning protection system (LPS). Type 1+2 is required when the building is supplied via overhead lines, or when an external LPS (lightning rod) is installed — per IEC 60364-5-53. Type 1+2 combines both classes in one module, eliminating the 10m separation requirement between Type 1 and Type 2 stages.

Can a single phase surge protector protect against direct lightning strikes?

A standard Type 2 single phase surge protector is rated for 8/20 µs induced surges only — it cannot handle the 10/350 µs impulse current from a direct or near-direct lightning strike. If your building has an external LPS (lightning rod) or is supplied via overhead lines, a Type 1+2 SPD is required at the MDB. Type 1+2 is tested to both waveforms and provides complete protection in a single module without requiring a separate Type 1 device.

What is the maximum cable length between a single phase SPD and the main busbar?

IEC 60364-5-53 requires the total lead length — the combined length of the live conductor from busbar to SPD terminal, plus the PE conductor from SPD to earth bar — to not exceed 0.5m. Every 10cm of excess adds approximately 1kV of residual voltage above the SPD's rated Up. A 1m total lead length on a device rated Up 1.5kV can result in an effective installed Up of 2.5kV or higher — exceeding the withstand rating of most distribution equipment. Mount the SPD as close to the busbars as the DIN rail layout allows.
