3-Phase Surge Protector — Earthing System Selection & Installation Cascade
Your earthing system dictates the required pole configuration and Uc voltage. Specifying the wrong configuration causes either under-protection or premature failure. Full selection guide →
| Earthing System | Pole Config | Uc | Key Rule | Recommended Model |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TN-S | 4P / 3P+N | 275V | N-PE mode essential — prevents neutral-earth potential rise during surge | TPK-40, TPK-I-50 |
| TT | 3P+1 | 320V | Higher Uc essential — prevents TOV trip on TT earth fault | TPK-40, TPK-12.5 |
| TN-C | 3P (3+0) | 255V | Never fit an N-PE module — creates parallel path for earth current | TPK-40, TPK-I-50 |
| IT | 3P+0 / 3P+1 | 385–440V | High Uc + leakage <1mA required — avoids false IMD alarms (hospitals) | TPK-40, TPK-12.5 |

TPK-I-50 — mandatory when external LPS is present. Handles 10/350µs direct lightning current, 50kA Iimp per pole.
TPK-40 directly after the main breaker — mandatory at every MDB and MCC per IEC 60364-5-53. Up ≤1.5kV.
Additional Type 2 SPD at sub-boards feeding sensitive loads. ≥10m cable separation from upstream Type 2, or use Type 1+2 combined.
4 Rules Every 3-Phase Surge Protector Installation Must Follow
Getting any of these wrong negates the protection — even if the right model is installed. These apply to every 3-phase surge protector installation. Full installation guide →
Combined L+N+PE connection wire must not exceed 0.5m. Each extra metre adds ~1kV inductive drop during a 10kA surge — directly reducing clamping effectiveness. Use V-wiring topology. Wiring guide →
IEC 60364-5-53 requires a short-circuit protection device in series with every SPD. TPK-20: MCB 63A min. TPK-40: MCB 125A min. Never exceed the maximum SCPD rating. Coordination guide →
IEC 61643-12 requires ≥10m cable between separate Type 1 and Type 2 units, or a ≥10µH decoupling inductor. Without separation the faster Type 2 absorbs energy beyond its rating. Alternative: use Type 1+2 combined SPD.
High earth impedance raises potential of all earthed equipment during a surge, negating clamping. IEC 62305-3 requires ≤10Ω. Measure annually. Earthing accessories →

3-Phase Surge Protector — Frequently Asked Questions
How do I select the right pole configuration for my 3-phase surge protector?
TN-S: 4P (4+0) with Uc 275V. TT: 3+1 configuration with Uc 320V — higher Uc is essential to prevent TOV trip. TN-C: 3+0 (no neutral protection) with Uc 255V — never fit an N-PE module. IT systems (hospitals, offshore): 3+0 or 3+1 with Uc 385–440V and leakage <1mA to avoid IMD false alarms. Wrong pole config or Uc causes under-protection or premature SPD failure. Full selection guide →
Why is 10m separation required between Type 1 and Type 2 3-phase SPD?
Without ≥10m cable separation, the faster Type 2 SPD activates before the Type 1 and absorbs the full 10/350µs lightning current impulse — which carries 10–20× more energy than the 8/20µs waveform the Type 2 was rated for, causing immediate failure. Solution: maintain 10m separation, or use a Type 1+2 combined 3-phase SPD which is factory-coordinated internally.
Can a 3-phase surge protector cause RCD tripping?
Yes — if the wrong Uc is selected. A 3-phase surge protector with Uc too close to nominal voltage has higher leakage through the MOV under normal conditions. For TT systems, this leakage may trip a sensitive 30mA RCD. Solution: use Uc 320V (not 275V) for TT systems. For IT systems, verify SPD leakage is <1mA to prevent IMD alarms. Tripping guide →
Do VFDs (variable frequency drives) need 3-phase surge protection?
Yes — VFDs are both victims and sources of surges. They generate high dv/dt switching transients that stress other equipment on the 400V bus, AND their IGBT power electronics are highly vulnerable to incoming surges. Install a Type 2 3-phase surge protector (TPK-40 3P+N) at the VFD panel AC input, and consider a Type 3 SPD at the VFD's control supply terminals. Industrial SPD guide →
Is TrilPeak 3-phase surge protector CE certified?
