Grid switching surges are smaller but far more frequent than lightning. Where should SPDs be installed in an EV charging station?
A Type 1+2 or Type 1 SPD at the main incoming distribution board handles high-energy surges for the whole site. Type 2 SPDs on individual charger branch circuits handle residual transients. Network SPDs on communication lines protect payment and 4G systems. For high-exposure outdoor sites, add site LPS. For IEC 61643-11 details refer to the IEC official standards body.
Why do EV chargers go offline after storms even when hardware is undamaged?
Payment terminals and 4G communication modules are extremely sensitive to induced surges on signal cables.
