Battery Storage Surge Protector — Buyer FAQ
Why does a BESS need a battery storage surge protector on the DC bus?
The battery DC bus connects directly to PCS inverter power electronics and BMS control boards. Surge currents bypass the AC SPD entirely and damage these components directly. An IEC 61643-31 DC battery storage surge protector at the battery bus clamps surges before they reach the PCS and BMS — protecting assets that cost far more than the SPD.
Why is thermal protection standard — not optional?
Battery storage cabinets are enclosed with limited airflow. An ageing MOV in thermal runaway generates heat in this enclosed space, creating fire risk. TrilPeak includes thermal disconnect in every unit as standard — in a BESS environment it is a fire safety requirement, not an upgrade.
What Uc do I specify for my battery pack voltage?
Uc must equal or exceed the maximum continuous DC bus voltage including state-of-charge variation at the top of the charge curve. For a 200V nominal lithium pack with peak charge reaching 218–220V, specify Uc 220Vdc. Use the voltage table above to match your architecture.
Can one BESS site need multiple different Uc SPDs?
Yes — this is the norm on utility-scale BESS. A typical installation needs TPK-40-DC 220V for the pack bus, TPK-40-DC 48V for the auxiliary bus, and TPK-40-DC 24V for control circuits. TrilPeak supplies all variants from one factory — one BOM, one CE document set, one order.
How does the remote contact integrate with the EMS?
The optional 3-pin NO/NC dry contact connects to the EMS or BMS I/O terminal block. When SPD status changes (normal → fault), the EMS dashboard generates a maintenance alert. Standard dry contact — no proprietary protocol. Compatible with all major BESS EMS and SCADA platforms.
