Direct Lightning Current — Iimp Rated
Required where external LPS is installed per IEC 62305
Type 1 AC Surge Protector — TPK-I-50 | 50kA Iimp Class I SPD
Type 1 AC surge protector for service entrance — handles direct lightning current (10/350µs waveform, Iimp). Installed at the LPZ 0→1 boundary between utility meter and main breaker. Required where an external lightning protection system (LPS) is installed per IEC 62305.
Standard AC Surge Protector — Main Distribution Board
Required at every MDB per IEC 61643-11
Type 2 AC Surge Protector — TPK-20 / TPK-40 | 20–100kA Imax Class II SPD
Type 2 AC surge protector for main distribution boards — the most widely specified AC SPD type. Clamps induced lightning and switching surges (8/20µs waveform, Imax). TPK-20 (20kA) and TPK-40 (40kA) models. Remote signalling NO/NC/COM on TPK-40 S variant. 1P / 2P / 1P+N / 3P / 3P+N / 4P pole configurations.

AC Surge Protector FAQ — Most Asked Questions by B2B Buyers
What is an AC surge protector and what does it protect against?
An AC surge protector (AC SPD) limits transient overvoltages on AC power distribution systems, protecting connected equipment from damage. It clamps voltage spikes caused by lightning strikes, utility grid switching, motor start/stop, and capacitor bank switching. Tested and classified per IEC 61643-11: Type 1 (service entrance), Type 2 (MDB), Type 3 (point-of-use).
How do I choose between Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 AC surge protectors?
Install Type 1 at the service entrance if your building has an external lightning protection system. Install Type 2 at every MDB for induced surge protection (8/20µs, Imax). Add Type 3 at sensitive equipment terminals for final-stage fine protection (Up ≤1.5kV). All three work as a coordinated cascade. Full comparison →
What Uc (MCOV) voltage rating should I select for my AC system?
Uc must be at least 1.1× the highest normal line voltage. For 230V TN-S: Uc ≥ 275V. For 230V TT earthing: Uc ≥ 320V. For 400V three-phase TN-S: Uc ≥ 275V (L-N). For 400V TT: Uc ≥ 320V (L-N). Wrong Uc selection is the most common cause of premature AC SPD failure. Use the SPD selector →
What is the minimum kA rating for industrial AC surge protectors?
Recommended minimums: Type 1 at service entrance — 50kA Iimp (10/350µs) per phase. Type 2 at MDB — 40kA Imax minimum, 65kA+ for high-exposure industrial sites. Higher kA rating = longer SPD service life. Never under-specify — the AC SPD cost is negligible compared to the PLCs, drives, and equipment it protects. Selection guide →
Do I need both Type 1 and Type 2 AC SPDs, or is one enough?
Both are required for complete protection at sites with external LPS. Type 1 alone doesn't provide fine downstream protection. Type 2 alone cannot handle direct lightning energy at the service entrance. Use a Type 1+2 combined SPD when wire length between service entrance and MDB SPD cannot be kept under 0.5m, or when panel space is limited.
What is the 0.5m lead length rule for AC surge protectors?
Total connecting wire length (line conductor + PE wire combined) must be ≤ 0.5m. Every additional 1m adds approximately 1kV under impulse conditions due to wire inductance. For installations where 0.5m cannot be maintained, use a combined Type 1+2 SPD or add a series decoupling inductor. Installation guide →
What backup protection does an AC surge protector require?
All AC SPDs require an upstream backup OCPD for short-circuit protection. Use slow-blow gG-type fuses sized per the manufacturer's datasheet for the specific Imax/Iimp rating. Never use fast-acting fuses — they may open before the SPD operates. The backup OCPD must be installed in series on the supply side. Coordination guide →
