99.99% Uptime Means Just 52 Minutes of Downtime Per Year — One Surge Consumes All of It
The 99.99% availability benchmark — the accepted industry standard for critical facilities — allows only 52 minutes of downtime per year. One surge event on the AC supply, network lines or DC rectifier can consume that budget instantly. TrilPeak supplies AC SPDs, network SPDs, telecom -48V DC SPDs and site lightning protection from one factory.
3 Ways a Surge Shuts Down a Data Center or Telecom Site
Each failure happens through a different entry point. Protecting one while leaving others open means the next storm still takes your facility offline.
The UPS Takes the Surge Directly
A grid switching transient enters through the AC incoming supply. Without upstream protection at the main board, the UPS absorbs the full transient energy — which it is not designed to handle. Every rack loses power simultaneously.
AC Is Protected. Network Goes Down Anyway.
Lightning induces a surge on an external Ethernet cable or IP camera feed. It enters the server room through the data port — completely bypassing all AC protection. Switches and servers fail from the network side.
Lightning Hits the Tower. Coverage Drops Instantly.
A direct strike travels to the base station's -48V DC rectifier. Standard AC SPDs cannot be used here — DC arcs do not self-extinguish. The rectifier is destroyed and cell coverage drops across the entire region.
What Data Center Surge Protection Does Your Site Need?
Different facility types face different risks. Identify your site below to see which protection layers apply.
Server Room — AC Power and Network Protection
Tower Site — -48V DC Rectifier Protection
High-Exposure Site — Full Protection Required
Data Center Surge Protection — 4 Entry Points, 4 Solutions
A surge only needs one unprotected path to cause a failure. Each layer below closes one entry point completely.
Why Critical Infrastructure Projects Choose TrilPeak
AC, DC and Signal — All From One Factory
We manufacture AC SPDs, -48V DC telecom SPDs and network SPDs in one facility. One supplier, one set of technical documentation for the complete data center surge protection scope.
Purpose-Built -48V DC SPD for Telecom
Our telecom DC SPD is engineered specifically for -48V rectifier systems — not an AC unit with a different label. A critical distinction for base station safety and reliability.
Full Technical Documentation Included
Every product ships with IEC-standard test reports and compliance documentation — ready for EPC project submittals, facility audits and insurance requirements without additional paperwork.
Samples Available. Fast Lead Time.
Engineering samples at standard product price. Stock items ship in 5–10 days. Custom configurations 15–25 days. OEM private labelling available for system integrators.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most asked by facility engineers and infrastructure procurement teams.
Why is 99.99% used as the data center uptime benchmark?
99.99% availability equates to approximately 52 minutes of allowable downtime per year — the standard referenced in Uptime Institute Tier classifications and most colocation SLA frameworks. A single unprotected surge event can consume this entire budget instantly. For IEC standards refer to the IEC official standards body.
Why can't standard AC SPDs be used on a -48V DC telecom bus?
DC arcs do not self-extinguish the way AC arcs do. An AC SPD on a DC bus will sustain an arc during a surge and cause fire. A dedicated -48V DC SPD with thermal disconnects is the only safe solution for telecom rectifier systems.
Do network cables need separate protection from the AC power feed?
Yes. Surges enter through external Ethernet, PoE and camera cables — bypassing all AC protection entirely. Dedicated network SPDs are essential to prevent this backdoor entry point.
Where should Type 1+2 and Type 2 SPDs be installed in a data center?
Type 1+2 at the main distribution board to handle the highest-energy surge currents from the grid. Type 2 downstream at sub-boards, UPS inputs and rack PDUs to clamp residual transients.
Can we get samples before placing a production order?
Yes. Samples at standard product price. Lead time for stock items is typically 5–10 days. Contact us with your voltage rating and we will confirm availability within 24 hours.
