DC Surge Protector Range — IEC 61643-31 Type 1+2 & Type 2
IEC 61643-31 defines two DC SPD types. Choose by site lightning exposure. Selection guide →
Type 2 DC Surge Protector — TPK-40-PV Series | 40kA Imax
The most widely specified photovoltaic surge protector. For commercial PV, BESS, EV DC fast chargers, VFD DC bus and telecom −48V systems. Clamps induced surges (8/20µs, Imax 40kA). Pluggable DIN rail — hot-swap in 30 s without system shutdown.
Type 1+2 DC Surge Protector — TPK-7-PV | 7kA Iimp
For open-field solar farms, mountainous / coastal sites, or grid-connected PV with external LPS per IEC 62305. Direct lightning (10/350µs, 7kA Iimp) + induced surges (8/20µs, 50kA Imax) in a single unit. When uncertain about site risk — always specify Type 1+2.
Which DC SPD for Your System?
DC SPD Installation in Solar PV Systems — IEC 61643-32
DC SPDs must be installed at the string combiner box (mandatory) and at the inverter DC input (recommended). Lead ≤ 0.5m total. Use DC-rated gPV fuse only.
or Type 1+2
IEC 61643-32 mandatory. Type 2 DC for standard sites; Type 1+2 for open-field, high lightning-risk or external LPS per IEC 62305.
Recommended for high-value inverters, long DC runs (>10m) and high-exposure outdoor environments. Type 2 DC only.
Each extra 1m adds ~1kV let-through. Use gPV fuse (IEC 60269-6) — never AC gG/gL fuses on DC circuits.
DC Surge Protector vs AC Surge Protector — Key Technical Differences
DC current has no zero-crossing — a DC arc persists indefinitely once struck, melts SPD internals and creates fire risk. DC surge protectors (IEC 61643-31) use active arc-quenching technology rated for continuous high-voltage DC. They are never interchangeable with AC surge protectors (IEC 61643-11).
| Parameter | AC SPD | DC SPD | Standard | Key Param |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arc quench | Zero-crossing (passive) | Active suppression | IEC 61643-31 | Ucpv |
| Type 1+2 DC | — | 10/350µs + 8/20µs | IEC 61643-31 | Iimp+Imax |
| Type 2 DC | — | 8/20µs induced surge | IEC 61643-31 | Imax |
| Voltage | 230V / 400V AC | 600 / 1000 / 1500V DC | IEC 61643-31 | Ucpv |
AC SPDs have no arc-quench mechanism for DC. A DC arc at 1000V+ will persist, overheat and destroy the SPD. IEC 61643-31 mandates DC-specific design and testing. AC SPD →
Ucpv ≥ 1.2× PV system open-circuit voltage (Voc). 1000V system: Ucpv ≥ 1200V. Undersizing causes premature SPD failure under normal DC operating voltage. SPD Selector →
IEC 61643-32 §4.3 requires DC SPD installation at the string combiner box. Omitting DC SPD voids most inverter warranties. NEC 690 (USA) and EN 50539-11 (EU) also mandate. PV Guide →
DC Surge Protector Selection Guide — Ucpv, Type & Application
Key formula: Ucpv (MCOV) ≥ 1.2 × open-circuit voltage (Voc). Select Type 1+2 DC SPD for open-field & high lightning-risk sites; Type 2 DC SPD for standard commercial solar PV, BESS and EV charger installations per IEC 61643-32.
| DC System & Application | System Voc | Recommended Model | Min. Ucpv | Min. kA | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solar PV — Commercial Rooftop | ≤600V DC | TPK-40-PV600 | 720V | 40kA | Type 2 |
| Solar PV — 1000V System | ≤1000V DC | TPK-40-PV1000 | 1200V | 40kA | Type 2 |
| Solar PV — 1500V Utility Scale | ≤1500V DC | TPK-40-PV1500 | 1800V | 40kA | Type 2 |
| Open-Field PV — High Lightning Risk | 500V–1500V DC | TPK-7-PV | Voc × 1.2 | 7kA Iimp | Type 1+2 |
| BESS — Battery Energy Storage | 48V–800V DC | TPK-40-DC | Per system | 40kA | Type 2 |
| EV DC Fast Charger (CCS / CHAdeMO) | 200V–1000V DC | TPK-40-PV | Per system | 40kA | Type 2 |
| Telecom −48V DC Bus | −48V DC | TPK-40-DC48 | 65V | 40kA | Type 2 |
| Industrial VFD DC Bus | 24V–220V DC | TPK-40-DC | Per system | 40kA | Type 2 |

DC Surge Protector FAQ — Solar PV, IEC 61643-31 & Selection Guide
What is a DC surge protector and why can't I use an AC SPD?
A DC surge protector (DC SPD) is designed specifically for DC electrical systems where AC SPDs will fail. AC SPDs rely on the 50/60Hz zero-crossing to extinguish internal arcs — DC current has no zero-crossing, so an arc inside an AC SPD on a DC circuit persists indefinitely and causes catastrophic failure, fire risk, and complete loss of protection. Always specify IEC 61643-31 certified DC SPDs for DC systems. AC SPD →
When do I need Type 1+2 DC SPD vs Type 2 DC SPD?
Use Type 1+2 DC SPD (Iimp 7kA, 10/350µs) for: open-field solar farms, rooftop PV in high lightning-risk zones, mountainous or coastal areas, or any site with an external lightning protection system (LPS). Use Type 2 DC SPD (Imax 40kA, 8/20µs) for: standard commercial rooftop, urban industrial, and lower lightning-risk installations. When uncertain, Type 1+2 provides complete protection. Solar guide →
How do I calculate the correct Ucpv (MCOV) for my solar PV system?
Ucpv ≥ 1.2 × system open-circuit voltage (Voc). For 600V PV: Ucpv ≥ 720V. For 1000V PV: Ucpv ≥ 1200V. For 1500V utility-scale: Ucpv ≥ 1800V. In cold climates, Voc rises above nameplate — always use worst-case cold-temperature Voc. Wrong Ucpv means the DC SPD will operate continuously in degradation mode and fail prematurely. TrilPeak TPK-40-PV covers: 500V / 600V / 800V / 1000V / 1200V / 1500V Ucpv. SPD Selector →
Is DC surge protection mandatory for solar PV systems?
Yes. IEC 61643-32 states: "DC surge protective devices shall be installed unless a risk assessment justifies otherwise." Regional mandates: NEC 690 (USA), IEC 62548 (international), EN 50539-11 (Europe). Omitting DC SPDs voids most inverter warranties and insurance claims after lightning damage. The inverter replacement cost ($2,000–$50,000+) far exceeds the DC SPD cost ($30–$100).
Where should I install a DC surge protector in a PV combiner box?
Per IEC 61643-32: install at the string combiner box (primary position — between PV strings and inverter DC cable), and optionally at the inverter DC input terminals. Critical rules: total lead length (DC+ + DC− + PE) ≤ 0.5m; connect in parallel to the DC circuit; install a DC-rated gPV fuse (IEC 60269-6) in series on the supply side. Never use AC fuses — they are not rated for DC arc interruption. Combiner box guide →
What backup fuse does a DC surge protector require?
All DC SPDs require DC-rated backup protection for short-circuit fault. Use gPV-type fuses (IEC 60269-6) rated for the full system DC voltage. Standard AC fuses (gG/gL type) must never be used on DC circuits — their AC arc-interruption mechanism fails on DC, creating fire risk. Size the gPV fuse per the manufacturer's datasheet for the specific Imax rating. Coordination guide →
How long does a DC surge protector last in a PV system?
Lifespan depends on surge frequency and energy. Check the status indicator monthly: green = operational, red = replace module. After direct lightning strike events, inspect all DC SPDs regardless of indicator status — cumulative energy absorption accelerates MOV degradation. TrilPeak's pluggable module design enables 30-second hot-swap replacement without shutting down the PV array, minimising energy yield loss. Replacement guide →
