The ITU-T and ETSI standard for telecom power is −48V DC. A telecom surge protector for this system must be Uc-rated at 48Vdc and internally configured for the floating negative bus topology — not a generic DC SPD reassigned to a telecom application.
The TPK-40-DC 48V is TrilPeak's dedicated telecom surge protector for −48V DC base station power systems. Clamps induced lightning surges on the −48V bus before they reach the rectifier, BBU, and RRU. Thermal protection standard. Optional remote fault signal for NMS/NOC integration. Pluggable cartridge, hot-swap without powering down the −48V bus.

Telecom Surge Protector — Base Station Installation Positions
A complete base station surge protection solution covers both the AC input and the −48V DC bus. Both positions serve different protection zones — neither replaces the other.
A Type 1+2 AC SPD or Type 1 AC SPD at the AC power input protects the rectifier AC input from grid-borne and direct lightning surges. Required for all tower sites per IEC 62305.
Installed on the −48V DC bus downstream of the rectifier, upstream of the BBU/RRU loads. Dedicated protection for all telecom equipment on the −48V bus. Optional remote fault signal connects to the power management unit or NMS for proactive maintenance alerting.
For sites with external data lines or Ethernet backhaul, a network signal SPD protects communication lines from conducted surges. Recommended for open-field tower sites in high lightning density zones.

Why does a base station need a telecom surge protector on the −48V bus?
The AC SPD protects the rectifier AC input from grid-side surges only. The −48V DC bus is exposed to conducted surges from the tower structure, antenna feeds, and cable runs — these bypass the AC SPD entirely and damage BBU, RRU, and microwave equipment. A dedicated IEC 61643-31 telecom surge protector on the −48V bus is required alongside the AC SPD.
What Uc rating is correct for a −48V telecom system?
Specify Uc 48Vdc. The TPK-40-DC 48V is matched to the ITU-T/ETSI standard −48V DC telecom power architecture. Up voltage protection level is ≤0.3kV — low clamping voltage relative to sensitive telecom equipment input ratings.
How does the remote fault signal connect to the NMS?
The optional 3-pin NO/NC dry contact connects to the base station BMS, power monitoring unit, or rectifier controller. When SPD status changes from normal to fault, the contact state change triggers a maintenance alert in the NMS or NOC dashboard. Standard dry contact — no proprietary protocol required.
