Where & How to Install a Type 2 SPD
The surge protection device type 2 is installed at the main distribution board (MDB) directly after the main breaker. It clamps residual surge energy before it reaches downstream circuits. Correct installation requires attention to position, lead length, and backup protection.
Type 1 SPD — handles direct lightning current (10/350µs). Mandatory when external LPS is present per IEC 62305.
TPK-20 or TPK-40 installed directly after the main breaker. Clamps residual surge to ≤1.5kV before it reaches all downstream circuits. Standard installation point per IEC 60364-5-53.
Type 3 SPD — close-protection for sensitive equipment. Requires ≥10m cable separation from Type 2 upstream per IEC 61643-12.
4 Critical IEC Installation Rules

What is a Type 2 surge protector?
A Type 2 surge protector (Class II SPD per IEC 61643-11) is installed in the main distribution board (MDB) to protect electrical installations from residual lightning energy and switching surges. It is tested using an 8/20µs impulse waveform (Imax and In parameters). It does not handle direct lightning strikes — that requires a Type 1 SPD.
What is the difference between 20kA and 40kA?
This refers to the Maximum Discharge Current (Imax) the SPD can safely divert once before failing. TPK-20 (20kA Imax, 10kA In) is standard for residential and light commercial boards. TPK-40 (40kA Imax, 20kA In) offers higher durability and is the standard specification for industrial panels, data centres, and commercial MDBs.
When should I choose pluggable over non-pluggable (monobloc)?
Pluggable SPDs (like the TPK-40) feature a removable MOV cartridge. When the SPD reaches the end of its life (indicator turns red), you can pull out the old cartridge and push in a new one without disconnecting any wires or de-energising the entire panel. This is highly recommended for commercial and industrial sites to minimize downtime.
What does Uc 275V, 320V, and 385V mean?
Uc is the Maximum Continuous Operating Voltage. It must be higher than your system's highest possible fluctuating voltage. For a standard 230V/400V TN-S system, Uc 275V is the absolute minimum, but Uc 320V provides a safer margin against grid overvoltages without degrading protection. For IT systems, much higher Uc values (e.g., 420V) are required.
Do I need a backup circuit breaker for a Type 2 SPD?
Yes. IEC 60364-5-53 mandates a Short-Circuit Protection Device (SCPD) in series with the SPD. If the MOV fails in a short-circuit state, the SPD cannot interrupt the fault current — the backup MCB or fuse must trip to prevent a fire. For the TPK-20, use a 63A MCB. What is the remote signalling contact?
Available on the TPK-40, the remote signalling contact is a small 3-pin terminal (NO/NC/COM) that connects to a Building Management System (BMS) or alarm. If the SPD cartridge fails, the internal switch flips, sending a signal to the maintenance team that replacement is required.
