How to Select the Right Type 2 SPD
Three parameters determine the correct Type 2 SPD: Imax rating, Uc voltage, and pole configuration. Getting any one wrong means either under-protection or premature failure.
Choose Imax Rating — Based on Installation Point
Residential consumer units, light commercial sub-panels, apartments. 18mm per-pole DIN profile.
Commercial MDB, industrial panels, data centres, EV charging, solar PV AC output. Pluggable cartridge.
Buildings with external LPS, overhead supply lines, high lightning-risk sites. Replaces Type 1 + Type 2 in one module.
Select Uc Voltage & Pole Configuration by Earthing System
| System | Voltage | Earthing | Poles | Uc (L-N) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single Phase | 230V | TN-S | 1P+N | 275V |
| Single Phase | 230V | TT | 1P+N | 320V |
| 3-Phase | 400V | TN-S | 3P+N or 4P | 275V |
| 3-Phase | 400V | TT | 3P+N | 320V |
| 3-Phase | 480V | TN-S | 3P+N or 4P | 385V |
Custom Uc available on request. Use SPD Selector tool for automatic recommendation.
Uc — Max Continuous Operating Voltage
Must be ≥ the highest RMS voltage during normal operation including temporary overvoltages. Formula: Uc ≥ 1.1 × Un. Too low = premature MOV degradation. Standard: 275V (TN-S 230V), 320V (TT), 385V (480V systems).
Up — Voltage Protection Level
Maximum clamping voltage during a test surge. Lower Up = better equipment protection. IEC 60364-5-53 requires Up ≤ equipment's rated impulse withstand (Uimp). TPK-40 achieves Up ≤ 1.5kV — meets OVC I for the most sensitive equipment.
Imax vs In — Know the Difference
In = nominal discharge current, used for coordination (SPD survives 15 surges at this level). Imax = single-impulse peak the SPD withstands without damage. Specify Imax for exposure level; In for system coordination.

Hot-Swap Cartridge Replacement — No Rewiring Required
When the TPK-40 reaches end-of-life, the MOV cartridge slides out and a replacement slides in — without touching a single wire. This is critical for commercial and data centre panels where the backup MCB must be operated before any SPD work, but rewiring is not required. The base element remains permanently wired; only the active cartridge is replaced. Replacement indicators & service intervals →
Full Type 2 SPD Range — Standard & High-Capacity
TPK-20 and TPK-40 are standard stock items covering the majority of commercial and residential installations. When Imax exceeds 40kA, the installation point typically requires a Type 1+2 combined SPD rated to the 10/350µs waveform — not a higher-kA Type 2.

Where & How to Install a Type 2 SPD
The Type 2 SPD is the most widely specified protection class — installed at the main distribution board (MDB) directly after the main breaker. It clamps residual surge energy from the service entrance before it reaches downstream circuits. Correct installation requires attention to position, lead length, and backup protection.
Type 1 SPD — handles direct lightning current (10/350µs). Mandatory when external LPS is present per IEC 60364-5-53.
TPK-20 or TPK-40 installed directly after the main breaker. Clamps residual surge to ≤1.5kV before it reaches all downstream circuits. Standard installation point per IEC 60364-5-53.
Type 3 SPD — close-protection for sensitive equipment (servers, PLCs, AV). Requires ≥10m cable separation from Type 2 upstream per IEC 61643-12.
4 Critical IEC Installation Rules
Combined length of L/N connection wire + PE wire must not exceed 0.5 m. Each extra metre adds ~1kV inductive drop during a 10kA surge — directly negating the SPD clamping voltage. Use V-wiring topology. See installation guide.
IEC 60364-5-53 requires a Short-Circuit Protection Device in series with every SPD. TPK-20: MCB 63A min. TPK-40: MCB 125A min. Never exceed the maximum rating in the datasheet. See circuit breaker coordination guide.
When Type 1 and Type 2 are installed as separate units, IEC 61643-12 requires ≥10 m cable between them, or a ≥10µH decoupling inductor. Alternatively: use a Type 1+2 combined SPD to eliminate this requirement entirely.
The SPD diverts surge current to earth — a high-impedance earth raises all equipment potential during a surge, negating clamping effectiveness. IEC 62305-3 requires ≤10Ω. See grounding accessories.
Pluggable TPK-40 — Zero-Rewiring Replacement
The TPK-40 cartridge slides out without disconnecting any wiring. Operate the backup MCB, swap the cartridge, reset the MCB. Downtime under 60 seconds. Service intervals →

Type 2 is the most universally deployed SPD class. These three applications account for the majority of Type 2 SPD installations worldwide — each with specific selection requirements.
Commercial Building MDB
The most common Type 2 application. Required at every MDB per IEC 60364-5-53 unless a formal risk assessment (IEC 62305-2) justifies omission — which is rare in commercial buildings.
- Single-phase 230V: TPK-20 1P+N, Uc 275V (TN-S) or 320V (TT)
- 3-phase 400V TN-S: TPK-40 3P+N, Uc 275V L-N
- Remote signalling (NO/NC) recommended for BMS integration
- Pluggable TPK-40 allows cartridge replacement without rewiring
Solar PV Inverter Output
The AC output side of every grid-connected inverter requires a Type 2 AC SPD. This is separate from — and in addition to — the DC SPD on the string side. Often omitted from PV project BOMs.
- Single-phase residential: TPK-20 1P+N at inverter AC output
- 3-phase commercial: TPK-40 3P+N at inverter MDB connection point
- Utility-scale: Type 1+2 at transformer secondary + Type 2 at inverter output
- Coordinate with DC SPD per IEC 62305-4 zone requirements
Industrial Panel & PLC Cabinet
Industrial environments face both external lightning surges and internal switching transients from VFDs, contactors, and welding equipment. The Type 2 SPD at the panel AC feed is the first line of defence for control systems.
- VFD installations: TPK-40 3P+N at MCC cabinet AC incoming
- Uc selection: 385V for 400V systems with ±10% EN 50160 tolerance
- Follow with Type 3 SPD at PLC supply rail (IEC 61643-12 coordination)
- Remote fault contact essential for SCADA monitoring

What is a Type 2 SPD?
A Type 2 Surge Protective Device (SPD) is installed at the main distribution board (MDB), directly after the main breaker. It clamps residual surge energy from lightning and switching transients to safe levels before it reaches downstream circuits and equipment. Classified under IEC 61643-11 with an 8/20µs current waveform, with Imax ratings from 20kA to 40kA for standard applications.
What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 SPD?
Type 1 is installed at the service entrance and handles direct lightning current (10/350µs waveform, higher energy — rated by Iimp). Type 2 is installed at the MDB and handles residual surge energy (8/20µs waveform — rated by Imax/In). In a cascaded system, Type 1 absorbs the bulk energy first; Type 2 provides fine clamping downstream. A Type 2 SPD cannot substitute for a Type 1 — the 10/350µs waveform carries 10–20× more energy. Full comparison guide →
Can I use a Type 2 SPD without a Type 1?
Yes, in many installations. If there is no external lightning protection system (LPS) and the building is supplied via underground cables, IEC 60364-5-53 permits Type 2 alone at the MDB. However, if an LPS is present, or the supply is via overhead lines in areas with significant lightning activity, a Type 1 SPD at the service entrance is mandatory. When in doubt, use a combined Type 1+2 device — it covers both requirements in one module.
What is the difference between Imax and In?
In (nominal discharge current) is the rated surge current value used for product classification and system coordination — the SPD must survive 15 surges at this level without degradation. Imax (maximum discharge current) is the single-impulse peak the SPD can discharge without damage. Always select Imax based on your installation's exposure level. For most commercial MDB installations, Imax = 40kA (TPK-40) is the standard specification.
What Uc voltage should I select?
Uc must be ≥ the maximum continuous RMS voltage the SPD will see. For 230V TN-S: Uc = 275V minimum. For 230V TT earthing: Uc = 320V. For 400V 3-phase TN-S: Uc = 275V L-N. For systems with frequent temporary overvoltages, add 10–15% margin. Selecting Uc too close to the nominal voltage causes premature MOV degradation from sustained thermal stress. TrilPeak standard options: 275V, 320V, 385V — custom Uc available on request.
What pole configurations are available?
TrilPeak TPK-20 and TPK-40 series cover all standard configurations: 1P, 2P, 1P+N, 3P, 3P+N, and 4P. For single-phase 230V TN-S systems, 1P+N is standard. For 3-phase 400V TN-S, 3P+N or 4P. For TT earthing systems, 3P+N is typically specified. For IT earthing (isolated neutral), consult our engineers — mode selection is critical to avoid SPD failure on first earth fault. Selection guide →
Do I need a Type 2 SPD for a solar PV system?
Yes — on both sides. On the DC side, an IEC 61643-31 certified DC SPD is required at the string combiner box and inverter DC input. On the AC side, a Type 2 AC SPD (IEC 61643-11) is required at the inverter output distribution board. The DC inverter stage electrically isolates AC and DC sides, so an AC SPD provides zero protection for the DC circuits. Both are required for complete IEC 62305-4 compliance. Solar PV guide →
What is the difference between a pluggable and hard-wired Type 2 SPD?
A pluggable SPD (TPK-40) has a separable cartridge insert — when the MOV reaches end-of-life, the cartridge is replaced without disconnecting any wiring. This is the preferred design for commercial and industrial installations where downtime must be minimised. A hard-wired SPD (TPK-20) is a fixed single-piece unit — replacement requires disconnecting the supply. Pluggable designs are strongly preferred for panels where the SPD replacement may be done by non-electrical maintenance staff.
How do I know when my Type 2 SPD needs replacement?
TrilPeak TPK-20 and TPK-40 have a visual status window (green = operational, red/black = failed) and an optional remote dry-contact fault signal. Red indicator means the thermal disconnector has opened — the circuit is no longer protected and the unit must be replaced immediately. Do not continue operating with a failed SPD. Schedule visual inspection quarterly. After any nearby direct lightning strike, inspect immediately regardless of indicator status. Replacement guide →
Is a backup MCB or fuse required with a Type 2 SPD?
Yes — IEC 60364-5-53 Clause 534 requires a short-circuit protection device (SCPD) in series with every SPD. The SCPD must be rated for the prospective short-circuit current at the installation point. For TPK-20: MCB rated 63A. For TPK-40: MCB rated 125A. Never exceed the maximum SCPD rating stated in the product datasheet — oversizing the SCPD can prevent safe disconnection of a failed SPD, causing fire risk.
Is TrilPeak Type 2 SPD CE certified?
Yes — third-party CE certification issued by ECM Italy (Ente Certificazione Macchine), an EU notified body. Certificate No. 0P260312.YTEUD26, valid to March 2031, covering 25 AC SPD models to IEC/EN 61643-11:2025. This is type testing by an independent body — not manufacturer self-declaration. The certificate number is verifiable directly on the ECM registry. View certificate →
Can TrilPeak supply Type 2 SPD under OEM private label?
Yes. The full OEM package includes: custom logo on product and packaging, rebranded English datasheets, and an EU Declaration of Conformity issued in your company name as EU importer — the legally correct structure for CE-marked product distribution in the EU. MOQ is negotiable, NDA is standard, and exclusivity is available by territory. Samples in 7 days. OEM programme →
What happens if the Type 2 SPD fails short-circuit?
When an SPD reaches end-of-life or absorbs an extreme surge, it may fail to a short-circuit state. This is why the backup SCPD (MCB or fuse) is mandatory — it disconnects the failed SPD before fault current can damage the distribution board or cause fire. A properly sized SCPD will clear the fault within milliseconds. TrilPeak SPDs incorporate thermal disconnector mechanisms that typically fail-open (circuit break) rather than fail-short, providing an additional safety layer.
What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for wholesale?
Standard wholesale MOQ starts from 100 units per model. For OEM private-label orders, MOQ is 500 units minimum. Mixed-model orders and smaller trial orders are available — contact us to discuss. All wholesale orders include CE documentation (Declaration of Conformity and test certificate reference) as standard. Factory-direct pricing with no distributor margin. Request a quote →
What is the difference between IEC 61643-11 and UL 1449?
IEC 61643-11 is the international standard used in Europe, Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and most global markets. UL 1449 is the North American standard (USA/Canada). Both classify SPDs by installation position (Type 1/2/3 in IEC; Type 1/2/3/4 in UL) and test them with similar waveforms. TrilPeak products are certified to IEC/EN 61643-11. For North American projects, consult your AHJ — IEC-certified SPDs are increasingly accepted with appropriate documentation.
