The TPK-10 type 3 surge protector is the final-stage point-of-use SPD installed directly at the equipment terminal — clamps residual surge voltage to ≤1.5kV after upstream Type 2 SPD at the MDB. Most installations use single-phase configurations (1+0, 1+1, 2+0). Three-phase versions (3+0, 3+1, 4+0) are available for industrial PLCs, drives, and critical 3-phase equipment. Hot-swap plug-in module — replacement without system shutdown. Optional remote signalling (S variant) for BMS/SCADA integration. Installation guide → · PLC protection →

Type 3 is the final stage. Upstream protection (Type 1 or 2) is required for full system coordination.
Where to Install Type 3 SPD — Point-of-Use
Type 3 SPD is installed as close as possible to the sensitive equipment terminal, often inside the end-user machine cabinet or wall outlet. It acts as the final buffer against residual surges that pass through Type 1 and Type 2 devices.
Type 1 SPD — first stage protection.
Type 2 SPD — intermediate protection.
TPK-10 installed at machine entrance. Clamps voltage to ≤1.5kV for sensitive PLC/PCB inputs. Requires ≥10m separation from upstream Type 2.

What is a Type 3 SPD?
A Type 3 SPD (Class III SPD per IEC 61643-11) is the final-stage device installed as close as possible to the protected equipment (PLC, instrument, appliance). Its purpose is to clamp residual surge voltage to a level low enough (Up ≤1.5kV) for sensitive electronic equipment, after higher energy surges have been managed by Type 1 and Type 2 devices upstream.
Do I always need a Type 3 if I have Type 2?
If the distance between the Type 2 SPD at the MDB and the sensitive equipment exceeds 10–20 meters, or if the equipment is extremely sensitive to voltage spikes (e.g., medical devices, precision lab instruments), a Type 3 SPD at the equipment terminal is necessary to compensate for surge voltage oscillation along the cable run.
Can a Type 3 SPD be used alone?
No. Type 3 SPDs have very limited surge energy handling capacity. They are designed only for residual surges. They must be part of a coordinated protection cascade (Type 1 or Type 2 upstream). Using a Type 3 alone in an area with any significant lightning exposure will result in immediate failure.
What is the 10m separation rule?
IEC 61643-12 recommends a minimum cable distance of 10 meters between Type 2 and Type 3 SPDs. This separation is required to ensure proper coordination; without it, the Type 3 device may experience higher surge energy than its rating allows, leading to premature failure.
