The panel has AC surge protection installed. After a storm, the PLC communication board fails. The surge entered through the RS485 cable from a remote field sensor — bypassing the power SPD completely. This is the most common and most overlooked failure mode in industrial automation. Why must RS485 signal lines be protected separately from the AC power feed?
Surges induced on long field device cables enter the PLC directly through the RS485 communication port — bypassing AC surge protection entirely. If only the AC supply is protected, the PLC is still vulnerable to destruction via its data ports. Both pathways require dedicated industrial automation surge protection.
