Scenario 1

The PLC Is Destroyed. The Line Stops.

A lightning-induced transient on the incoming AC supply destroys the PLC and motor control center simultaneously. Hardware replacement costs thousands. Surges induced on long field device cables enter the PLC directly through the RS485 communication port — bypassing AC surge protection entirely. If only the AC supply is protected, the PLC is still vulnerable to destruction via its data ports. Both pathways require dedicated industrial automation surge protection.
