Solar PV surge protection — IEC 61643-31 DC SPD installation on utility scale solar farm
Solar PV Surge Protection · IEC 61643-31

A Lightning Strike Can Destroy a $100K+ Inverter in Under 1 Millisecond

Purpose-built solar PV surge protection for utility, commercial and rooftop installations.

Standard AC breakers cannot react fast enough to clamp DC-side transients. A single unprotected lightning event on a PV string can destroy the inverter, take the plant offline for weeks and wipe out weeks of energy yield. TrilPeak's IEC 61643-31 compliant DC and AC SPDs deliver complete solar PV surge protection — from the string input to the grid connection.

What Actually Goes Wrong

Three Solar PV Surge Protection Failures That Stop Energy Production

Most solar PV surge damage is preventable. These are the scenarios that plant owners, EPCs and integrators encounter — and what causes them.

Scenario 1

The Inverter Is Destroyed. The Plant Goes Offline.

A lightning strike on an exposed PV array induces a massive surge down the DC strings into the inverter. DC arcs do not cross zero — standard protection cannot stop them. The inverter is destroyed instantly. Replacement hardware takes 2–6 weeks. Every day offline is energy yield permanently lost.

Downtime 2–6 weeks offline
Scenario 2

The Combiner Box Catches Fire.

Rooftop and ground-mount combiner boxes aggregate multiple DC strings in enclosed outdoor environments. A direct strike without proper DC-specific SPDs causes thermal runaway — fire damage takes out multiple strings permanently and may spread to the array structure itself.

Damage Multiple strings lost
Scenario 3

The AC Output Stage Fails Gradually.

Grid switching events inject transients through the AC connection into the inverter's output stage. Without a Type 1+2 SPD at the grid tie-in point, the AC board takes repeated hits — performance degrades over months before complete failure. Often misdiagnosed as inverter wear.

Pattern Gradual hidden damage

What Solar PV Surge Protection Does Your Installation Need?

Solar PV installations vary significantly in scale and risk profile. Identify your project type below to see which protection layers apply.

Rooftop PV

Residential or Small Commercial Rooftop

String inverter system on a building rooftop. DC strings are the primary risk — a single inverter loss is the most costly failure. AC grid-side protection is secondary but recommended.
Solar DC SPD — at the inverter DC input
Type 2 SPD — at the AC output distribution board
Ground-Mount / Utility

Industrial or Utility-Scale Ground-Mount Plant

Large-scale ground-mount with central or string inverters, combiner boxes and a dedicated grid connection. All four protection layers are typically required. Inverter replacement cost and downtime make full protection economically essential.

Type 1+2 SPD — at the AC grid tie-in point
ESE Lightning Rod + Grounding — site LPS for the array footprint
Solar + Storage

PV Plant with Co-Located Battery Storage

Solar PV system with battery energy storage. The BESS power conversion system and BMS boards are as sensitive to surges as the inverter — and more expensive to replace. Dedicated BESS SPD protection is required in addition to standard PV layers.

Complete Solar PV Surge Protection System — IEC 61643-31

Each layer addresses a specific failure mode. Leaving any layer unprotected creates a gap that surges will find.

1
DC Side — String Inverter Input & Combiner Box
Without this: Lightning-induced surges travel down the DC strings and destroy the inverter directly. DC arcs cannot be extinguished by standard protection — only IEC 61643-31 certified DC SPDs can clamp this safely.
Solar PV DC SPD
IEC 61643-31 certified. Installed at the inverter DC input or combiner box output — clamps PV string surges before they reach the inverter.
2
AC Side — Inverter Output to Grid Connection
Without this: Grid switching surges enter the inverter AC output stage repeatedly. The damage accumulates over time — the inverter degrades gradually before failing completely, often without a clear cause.
Type 1+2 SPD / Type 2 SPD
AC protection at the grid tie-in point — blocks grid transients from feeding back into the inverter's AC output board.
3
Site Lightning Protection — Array Footprint & Structures
Without this: A direct strike to the array structure generates an impulse current that overwhelms all downstream SPD protection. Required for ground-mount plants and high-lightning-risk regions.
ESE Lightning Rod + Grounding & Earthing
Intercepts direct strikes and safely channels the impulse current to a low-resistance earth — protecting structures and all downstream equipment.
4
Battery Storage — BESS DC Bus
Without this: The BESS power conversion system and BMS boards are as sensitive to DC surges as the PV inverter. Co-located storage is the most commonly overlooked protection gap in solar PV projects.
BESS / Battery Storage SPD
Wide-voltage DC protection with thermal disconnects for co-located battery energy storage — engineered specifically for BESS applications.

IEC 61643-31 — Not Repurposed AC Units

Our solar DC SPDs are strictly engineered to IEC 61643-31. We do not repurpose AC SPDs for DC applications — a common industry shortcut that creates fire risk during a surge event on a PV string.

In-House MOV Manufacturing

We manufacture our own Metal Oxide Varistor chips — direct control over clamping voltage and thermal performance for DC applications where tolerances are tighter than AC.

Solar PV Surge Protection — FAQ

Most asked by solar EPCs, system integrators and inverter OEMs.

Why can't I use a standard AC SPD on the solar inverter DC input?

DC current has no natural zero-crossing point, so DC arcs are far harder to extinguish than AC arcs. An AC SPD on a DC string will likely sustain an arc and cause fire. IEC 61643-31 defines the specific thermal disconnect requirements for safe solar PV DC protection. For full standard details refer to the IEC official standards body.

How many DC SPDs does a ground-mount solar plant need?

Typically one DC SPD per combiner box output, and one at each string inverter DC input where combiner boxes are not used. The exact quantity depends on your string configuration. Send us your single-line diagram and we will confirm the specification within 24 hours.

Is IEC 61643-31 the correct standard for solar PV DC protection?

Yes. IEC 61643-31 specifically covers surge protection for photovoltaic DC systems. All TrilPeak solar DC SPDs are tested and documented to this standard. Full technical documentation is included with every order for project submittals.

Can we get samples before placing a production order?

Yes. Samples at standard product price. Lead time for stock items is typically 5–10 days. Contact us with your voltage and current rating requirements and we will confirm availability within 24 hours.

Can TrilPeak supply the complete protection BOM for a solar project?

Yes. We manufacture solar DC SPDs, AC SPDs, BESS SPDs, ESE air terminals and grounding accessories from one factory with one technical documentation set.
