ODM is a structured engineering process. Unlike OEM where products are ready to ship, ODM involves real design work โ€” and we want to be transparent about what that means for timelines and process.

We start every ODM project with a free feasibility assessment. Send us your specification or drawings and we will respond within 24 hours with a clear statement of what is achievable, what the tooling or development cost would be, and a realistic project timeline.

What information do I need to provide to start an ODM project?+

You don't need a complete specification to start. A brief description of what you need is enough for an initial conversation โ€” for example: "We need a Type 2 SPD in a compact housing for a 480V AC system, with a specific terminal configuration for our panel design."

For a formal feasibility assessment, the more detail you can provide the better: electrical parameters (voltage, current ratings, Up), mechanical requirements (dimensions, mounting), target certification, and estimated annual volume. We can work from rough briefs, detailed drawings, or anything in between.

How is my intellectual property protected?+

We sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) before any technical specifications, drawings, or proprietary information is shared with our team. This is non-negotiable โ€” we initiate the NDA, not you.

Additionally, ODM products developed exclusively for you are not offered to other customers. Your product design, tooling, and specifications remain yours. We do not cross-sell ODM designs between clients under any circumstances.

What is the typical cost for tooling and development?+

Development and tooling cost varies significantly depending on the scope. Parameter modifications to an existing product (custom voltage, current rating) may involve minimal tooling cost. New housing development requiring new injection moulds typically involves tooling investment, which we quote precisely after reviewing your mechanical requirements.

We provide a detailed cost breakdown in the engineering proposal โ€” development cost, tooling cost, unit pricing, and certification cost are all itemised separately. Tooling costs are typically amortised over the production volume, reducing effective unit cost at scale.

How long does ODM development take from start to certified product?+

Timeline depends heavily on the scope of customisation and the target certification:

Parameter modification only (using existing housing and platform): 4โ€“8 weeks to certified product.
New housing with parameter changes: 10โ€“16 weeks including tooling and certification.
Full new product development: 16โ€“26 weeks depending on complexity and certification requirements.

We provide a confirmed project schedule at the proposal stage. Certification lab timelines are the most variable factor โ€” we select labs with the fastest turnaround for your target certification.

What certifications can ODM products be certified to?+

Currently, TrilPeak's standard certification pathway for ODM products is CE (Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU and EMC Directive 2014/30/EU), type tested to IEC 61643-11. This covers all EU member states and EEA countries โ€” the most commonly requested certification for our client base.

If your target market requires other certifications such as UL (North America) or TรœV, we recommend discussing this at the feasibility stage. We can advise on the best pathway and whether third-party laboratory coordination is required for your specific requirements.

What is the minimum order quantity for ODM products?+

ODM MOQ is discussed on a per-project basis and depends on the tooling investment and product complexity. Generally, products requiring significant tooling investment need higher volumes to make the economics work โ€” typically 1,000 pcs or more for full new tooling development. Parameter modifications with minimal tooling can often be produced at lower volumes.
